Weight Training Safely or Womens Bodies Womens Wisdom

Weight Training Safely

Author: Bruce Comstock

No pain, no gain. That's the phrase in the heads of most people who actively lift weights, but it is extremely misleading. While there are sensations of pain that indicate the activity in question is beneficial, the vast majority of aches and pains-severe pain in many cases-associated with weight training are indicators of the improper use of technique that result in tissue damage. Weight Training Safely shows readers steps they can take to dramatically increase the benefits of their training and, equally importantly, dramatically decrease their potential for injury.

Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom: Creating Physical and Emotional Health and Healing

Author: Christiane Northrup

Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom powerfully demonstrates that when women change the basic conditions of their lives that lead to health problems, they heal faster, more completely, and with far fewer medical interventions. Now Dr. Northrup brings us vital new information about the best techniques of Western medicine and the best alternative therapies, showing how to incorporate both into a complementary whole. She guides readers through the entire range of women's health problems, and offers strikingly new, positive perspectives on normal processes, such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

Publishers Weekly

This guide goes far beyond standard self-help books [and] is as accessible as it is empowering.

Library Journal

While this book offers a great deal of sound and sympathetic advice about healthy living for women, it is accompanied by an excess of feminist rhetoric and New Age mumbo jumbo. (Do fibroids really "result when we are flowing life energy into dead ends, such as jobs or relationships we have outgrown''?) The reader might feel more comfortable skipping those parts of this otherwise excellent work. Northrup, the founder of a women's health clinic in Maine, takes up women's standard health problems and offers spiritual and philosophical counsel along with suggestions on dietary change, confronting one's feelings about disease, visualization practices, and other holistic remedies. Although much of this same advice can be found elsewhere, Northrup's approach is more casual. For example, she feels that the main reason for exercise should be that you enjoy it.

Contains updated information on a range of subjects organized into three major sections -- from external control to inner guidance, anatomy, and how to integrate the best techniques of Western medicine with alternative therapies.

FGP - WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women

Through her clinical and personal experiences, Dr. Christiane Northrup came to see that negative circumstances in our lives often manifest themselves in our bodies as illness and pain. In Women's Bodies, she addresses each area of women's health and explains the potential problems that can arise, the possible treatments and the ways that each can be affected by a women's spiritual and emotional status. Examples from the lives of her patients illustrate how changes in attitude and life situations can affect a woman's health. She also gives advice on choosing a doctor, deciding on a treatment, nourishing ourselves and healing emotional scars. Christiane serves as an example of a doctor who has taken her conventional medical training and expanded it to address all aspects of health.

Supplement Shopper or Natural Medications for Psychiatric Disorders

Supplement Shopper: An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide

Author: Gregory Pouls

From Maile Pouls, Ph.D. and Greg Pouls, D.C., leading health practitioners in the fields of nutrition and biochemistry, comes a comprehensive A to Z guide to health conditions, and the dietary supplements that can reverse them.

Drs. Maile and Greg Pouls show how nutritional deficiency, can contribute to over 100 health conditions, including arthritis, eating disorders, osteoporosis, food allergies, and diabetes, and demonstrate how maintaining the proper balance of nutrients can help reverse these conditions permanently.

The authors document their findings with the latest clinical research and dozens of inspiring patient case histories of men and women they have successfully treated during their over 20 years as health practitioners.

Internet Book Watch - Internet Book Watch

Nutritionists Gregory Pouls, D.C. and Maile Pouls, Ph.D. point out that "in America, we have an overabundance of food but an underabundance of nutrition." They wrote The Supplement Shopper to assist those individuals who may need supplements in making good choices. Drs. Pouls emphasize that "there is no magic bullet or 'super' nutrient that works the same for everyone all the time." Supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and other nutrients. They are not drugs and are not presently regulated, other than the restrictions against manufacturers' claims for treating specific diseases. Individuals are often left wondering whether they need a particular supplement, and if so, how much to take. They also need information about other substances included in the supplement, such as artificial coloring or flavoring. Drs. Pouls start with "An A-Z Nutrient Guide," in which they describe the nutrients, how and when they should be taken, and what they do in the body. Part Two is "An A-Z of Health Conditions: Nutrients and Herbal Remedies." More than 80 major diseases and ailments, including allergies, diabetes, fatigue, heart disease, and thyroid conditions, are listed. Each includes a full description of the causes, symptoms, and recommendations for appropriate nutritional treatment. That's followed by an alphabetical listing by brand name of products that contain the recommended supplementation. Contact information, including phone numbers, is provided for each supplement manufacturer. The final section of the book provides information on using supplementation as preventative medicine. Topics include: brain power, longevity, detoxification, and immune support. In hisintroduction, Burton Goldberg urges readers to "take control of your own health. The tools are simple: eat right, use nutritional supplements wisely, don't use prescription drugs (except when absolutely necessary), detoxify, and exercise." The Supplement Shopper provides readers with all the information they need for using nutritional supplementation, including brand names of the products that will best meet their individual needs.

Last Call or If Its Not Food Dont Eat It

Last Call: Alcoholism and Recovery

Author: Jack H Hedblom

"I knew about drunk, but did not know anything about living sober. I hadn't really been sober for fifteen years. It wasn't enough that I stopped drinking. I had to learn how to live."

The journey from alcoholic insanity to sobriety -- and the pivotal role of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in navigating that transition -- is the focus of this book. Last Call offers perspectives on how and why AA is the most effective alcoholism treatment program in the world.

Through powerful first-person narratives like the one above -- composites of many anonymous speakers -- psychotherapist Jack H. Hedblom provides compelling insights into the minds and hearts of addicted drinkers, from bizarre behavior and denial to the moment of "hitting bottom" and seeking change.

Hedblom covers the process of getting sober, from diagnosis to detox to sobriety. Of particular focus is the long-term challenge of learning to live sober, in which recovering alcoholics learn to solve problems and live life without alcohol. In meeting this long-term challenge, Hedblom asserts, regular participation in AA reaps the greatest benefits.

Hedblom's vivid descriptions reveal AA meetings as gatherings of fellowship, compassion, tears, and laughter. He relates the history of AA, describes the role of sponsors, and elaborates the Twelve Steps and the Promises. He emphasizes the importance of spiritual development in recovery and refutes the common misconceptions that equate spirituality with organized religion.

By relating the stories of people who have escaped the tyranny of alcoholism with the help of AA, Hedblom reveals the road to recovery as a journey of self-discovery, change, and hope.

Library Journal

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, second only to lung cancer as a cause of death. Though it can usually be cured if detected early, many people are embarrassed and/or unwilling to discuss changes in bowel habits with their physicians or to get screened. The American Cancer Society (ACS) guide addresses those most susceptible to the cancer (people over 50) as well as their families, friends, and caregivers. As with other ACS books, information abounds. Lead editor Levin (vice president for cancer prevention & population sciences, MD Anderson Cancer Ctr., Univ. of Texas) oversees easy-to-understand explanations of who is at risk and why and material on symptoms; diagnostic tests, including disease staging (how aggressive and widespread the disease is);treatment options (e.g., surgery, radiation therapy, alternative and complementary medicine); and coping with side effects and living with a colostomy. Also included is practical advice on clinical trials, choosing a doctor, communicating with the healthcare team, and insurance, money, and workplace issues. A former certified nurse midwife who was diagnosed with cancer in 1996, Livingston furnishes similar statistics and also discusses the reluctance of patients and society in general to talk about this disease. Her aim with this book is to provide practical information and emotional support. Unfortunately, the format of her personal story interspersed with sidebars highlighting important points does not make for easy consultation or supply in-depth information. Each sidebar contains a mere snippet of information; the author's personal odyssey of her survival is the book's focus. Livingston's title is not suggested for purchase. The ACS guide, however, is indispensable for patients and caregivers and is highly recommended for all libraries.-Jodith Janes, Cleveland Clinic Fdn. Lib. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Listening to Depression or Diabetic Living Cookbook

Listening to Depression: How Understanding Your Pain Can Heal Your Life

Author: Lara Honos Webb

In her first book, The Gift of ADHD, psychologist Lara Honos-Webb shows a radical new way to reframe attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder as a range of strengths, aptitudes, and advantages. Now she applies her trend-setting, outside-the-box thinking to one of the most common mental health diagnoses: depression. Instead of directing your energies into overcoming or getting rid of depression, Honos-Webb helps you see periods of depression as opportunities for growth and introspection.

Each chapter of the book discusses a different aspect of depression as a gift or positive opportunity. Depression can be the start of a reorientation in life, a step in the search for meaning, or a chance for letting go of hurtful aspects of the self. It can also be a chance to deal with grief and loss and learn to expand possibilities. The book concludes with a section of advice about when it is important to defend against depression and how best to go about it when the need arises.

    Publishers Weekly

The "secrets" revealed in this friendly volume won't surprise many readers: losing weight requires burning more calories and consuming fewer. But given that the obesity epidemic is getting, well, bigger, the helpful tips and ideas are needed, even if they aren't particularly newsworthy. Sansone, creator of the Walk Away the Pounds book and video series, begins by explaining healthy dieting habits, highlighting typical stumbling blocks and outlining her PERFECT support system (an acronym for plan, educate, repeat, flex, exercise, celebrate and transform) that details steps she believes are key to straightforward weight loss. Then she introduces a six-week plan, complete with workbook pages for each day, designed to eradicate bad habits and promote good ones. She also includes dozens of reasonably tempting recipes (e.g., Apricot Lentil Stew, Chicken Mole, and Oatmeal-Raisin Chocolate Chip Cookies) to make in conjunction with the plan. Except for the depressing suggestion that "people do best if they spend most of their exercise time on indoor walking... walking in place... in complete privacy," this is an uplifting diet guide that can help anyone currently in the nonactive population segment-as long as they stick to it. Advances in Sport Psychology or Coping with Chronic Heartburn

    Advances in Sport Psychology

    Author: Thelma S Horn

The updated third edition of Advances in Sport Psychology offers a view of the latest research in the field of sport psychology. The text is written by 34 of the field's most prolific researchers and scholars, including Maureen Weiss, Shane Murphy, and Albert Carron. These contributors extend the boundaries that have defined the field and provide a clear direction for future research.

This third edition has been completely revised to reflect the advances that have occurred in the field within the past several years. The text provides readers with a complete picture of current research and emerging topics in sport psychology while challenging researchers to examine the factors that keep this discipline growing. Advances in Sport Psychology, Third Edition, provides a fresh look at sport psychology with these features:

    • Four new chapters on qualitative research methods, achievement goal theories, self-confidence, and family and peer influences
    • Significant revisions of the second-edition chapters, along with more concise overviews of individual topics
    • An analysis and synthesis of the state of knowledge for each topic and a discussion of future research directions
The text focuses on the most important and active areas of current research, which recognize the merging of individual and socioenvironmental factors in making sense of sport performance and behavior. Each chapter includes a definition of terms, an explanation of the chapter's scope, and an outline of the sections. The author then provides a review of the available research and theory on the chapter's main topic, analyzes the state of knowledge in the area, and devotes significantspace to future research directions.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I offers a comprehensive introduction to the field, including definitions, history, and research paradigms and methodologies. Part II explores individual characteristics that affect sport participants' behavior, including self-perceptions, attributional patterns and perceptions of control, motivational orientations, and achievement goal perspectives. Part III explores socioenvironmental factors that affect sport participants' behaviors. Part IV delves into the research and theory concerning intervention techniques used for enhancing performance and modifying athletes' behaviors, including imagery and mental rehearsal, attentional processes, goal setting, and flow and peak performance.

Advances in Sport Psychology, Third Edition, offers a new and thorough understanding of where sport psychology has been, where it is now, and where it is headed. This text will help students prepare and conduct their own research, and it will be a great reference for professionals who want to stay on the cutting-edge of the field.

Features:The four major sections include an introduction to sport psychology, individual differences, socioenvironmental factors, and psychological skills and intervention techniques. Each major section begins with an introduction to the topic. The chapters also have brief introductions, well labeled sections, concluding paragraphs, and future research directions. The topics are relevant for students, including the early discussions of research methodology. Later chapters discuss self-confidence, motivation, and achievement orientation. Group performance, social influences, and coaching effectiveness are also covered. These topics are intertwined with the concept of sports performance and each chapter provides a building block in the sport psychology process. Empirically grounded suggestions are made for enhancing performance that could easily be taken from the classroom to the playing field. Illustrations, figures, and tables summarize and helpconsolidate the learning process. The abundant references clearly have been updated. The only complaint I have is that they are listed at the end of the book, instead of being readily available at the end of each chapter, requiring a lot of extra page turning.
Assessment:This would be a sensible choice for instructors as a text for graduate students. It is well written in an interesting and informative manner. The references are plentiful and current, and the organization makes it easy to teach in sections. Additionally, the wide array of topics with practical guidance enhances its learning quality. It would be worth updating to this third edition.

Spiritual Tattoo or Bodies of Subversion

Spiritual Tattoo: A Cultural History of Tattooing, Piercing, Scarification, Branding, and Implants

    Author: John A Rush

Say "body modifications" and most people think of tattoos and piercings. They associate these mainly with the urban primitives of the 1980s to today and with primitive tribes. In fact, as this fascinating book shows, body mods have been on the scene since ancient times, traceable as far back as 1.5 million years, and they also encompass sacrification, branding, and implants. Professor John Rush outlines the processes and procedures of these radical physical alterations, showing their function as rites of passage, group identifiers, and mechanisms of social control. He explores the use of pain for spiritual purposes, such as purging sin and guilt, and examines the phenomenon of accidental cuts and punctures as individual events with sometimes profound implications for group survival. Spiritual Tattoo finds a remarkable consistency in body modifications from prehistory to the present, suggesting the importance of the body as a sacred geography from both social and psychological points of view.

The Only Menopause Guide Youll Need or Baby Greens

The Only Menopause Guide You'll Need

    Author: Michele Moor

Because women want a direct approach when seeking answers to questions about menopause, Dr. Michele Moore has written a book that recognizes the individuality of women as it addresses their concerns in dealing with the changes of menopause.

The Only Menopause Guide You'll Need is written for all women who are making decisions about treatment for symptoms of menopause. Dr. Moore invites the reader to assess her individual situation by looking into her own medical history and talking with a trusted health advisor. She helps the reader make informed choices about her treatment, should treatment be chosen, and offers a balanced account of options that range from traditional medical practice to holistic and alternative approaches. Above all, she encourages the reader to accept responsibility for her choices and to deal with the consequences of those choices while remaining proactive throughout the process. She also emphasizes the need for each woman to monitor her health condition closely and to reassess her situation as her health needs change through the years.

Dr. Moore incorporates in the book her own experience with perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause, as well as stories of her friends, neighbors, colleagues, and patients. She provides information about symptoms and treatment--including lifestyle changes and herbal and homeopathic remedies in addition to the treatments offered by traditional allopathic medicine. Hers is an empathetic and broad-minded voice that draws readers in at the same time it informs them, so that they can deal with inevitable changes in body, mind, and spirit.

"As women, we are accustomed to cycles and seasons, but thecrossing of the threshold of menopause into autumn brings grief, rage, fear, and great sadness to many women. Have you ever on a luminous autumn day had a shiver of anticipation of winter to come? And felt regret at the passing of the summer flowers and warmth? You might forget at that moment about the different pleasures of winter, and that spring and autumn come again, and that the seeds that are dormant or started in winter burst forth in glory come spring." -- from The Only Menopause Guide You'll Need

    Publishers Weekly

Since the 2001 publication of the first edition of Moore's well-received book, menopause has come into the media spotlight. Research showing that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can have negative side effects has many women rethinking the wisdom of approaching menopause as a medical problem. Moore, a physician in private practice in New Hampshire, calls menopause a "phase of development" not unlike adolescence and encourages readers to be patient with, and attentive to, themselves in this transitional time. She offers professional and personal advice about menopause's emotional and physiological symptoms, explaining complementary treatments, such as herbal supplements, meditation and exercise, as well as traditional therapies. She reviews recent data on HRT and devotes a chapter to estradiol, a very powerful estrogen she refers to as "the forgotten estrogen." Moore includes specific recommendations for coping with symptoms ranging from night sweats to low libido, and outlines menopausal women's "major health concerns," namely, osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease. "Most of the physical discomforts of the menopausal process are transient and can be eased using a combination of therapeutic approaches described in the pages of this book," she writes. "The drive toward the completeness of self can be a lasting legacy of this process." Women looking for a comforting guide to menopause, with practical information as well as a sense of spirituality, will find it here. (Nov. 30) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Rita H. Kelly, CNM, MS (East Carolina University)
Description: This small easy-to-read book addresses a universal concern of women:the "change of life":written from the viewpoint of the maturing woman and her concerns.
Purpose: To advise women who are starting to think about menopause is the main purpose of this book. A secondary purpose is to provide information to women so that they can open communication on this subject with their healthcare providers. These are worthy purposes that are met in a nicely balanced manner.
Audience: The intended audience is the woman who is planning ahead for the climacteric and who wants and needs information in order to do so. Secondarily, the audience is the woman already experiencing climacteric symptoms. Additionally, this is a nice review of options for the healthcare provider of such women. The author, a family practitioner, has had many years of practice to assist women in mid-life.
Features: This book covers not only the traditional allopathic approach to menopausal management, but also alternative therapies as well. These include herbal and homeopathic approaches. Also discussed is the woman's option to choose from among and between these therapies for what works best for her. Each chapter has its own references listed in the back. A very helpful glossary for terms unfamiliar to the lay person is a bonus.
Assessment: As a general reference for the woman in her 40s undergoing climacteric symptoms, this book is a good starting resource. It would also make good adjunct reading for the gynecology student. By treating the woman as a respected participant in her care, the author has done a favor to women.

    Library Journal

Two women who have experienced menopause share their personal stories along with advice for others. Posner, who had a family history of breast cancer, decided to write a book about her trial-and-error experience with nonhormonal approaches to treating the symptoms of menopause. Wanting to avoid both natural and synthetic estrogens, she researched and mapped her own course of treatment, relying on exercise, diet, and massive amounts of supplements. Written more like a autobiography than a medical book, her story isn't really that interesting, and Posner throws out some options like acupuncture because she "just felt it was not the way I wanted to treat menopause." An optional purchase, recommended only where there is a great interest in first-person health narratives. Women who really want authoritative help deciding what they should do will find better information in Moore's book. Moore also mentions her personal experience and does, in fact, recommend some of the same therapies that Posner uses, but this is advice coming from a medical practitioner. As a physician in private practice, she advocates starting small, using the least toxic treatments for symptoms such as hot flashes, migraines, and osteoporosis. She is open to all types of treatments ranging from homeopathy to hormone replacement. A more balanced treatment of menopause that includes allopathic and alternative therapies, her book is recommended for public and consumer health libraries.--Elizabeth Williams, Houston Acad. of Medicine-Texas Medical Ctr. paper: 0-8018-6408-9 Reassuring, accurate, informative help from a sympathetic guide. Physician Moore is comfortable with traditional and alternative medical practices, and she incorporates here both approaches into her intelligent, practical discussion of menopause and its possible discomforts. Moore believes that "this time in a woman's life is a natural phase of development, not a medical problem." In her view, therefore, symptoms of menopause need not be routinely treated. Rather, she provides information, including that on "the availability of intervention," so that women are equipped to make their own choices according to individual situations. She first explains the phases of menopause—perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause—and then looks at common health concerns of this age (including cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis). She then discusses the various allopathic, complementary, herbal, and homeopathic therapies that can support each phase of menopause. Finally, she discusses hormone replacement therapy. Throughout, thankfully, Moore stays away from the feel-good pep talks of some other guides for this age—she is down to earth all the way. On hot flashes and night sweats: "During the day, it is easier to appreciate a hot flash as a 'power surge' and to affirm your status as a new woman, but somehow resources waver in the depths of the night." Knowledgeable, sympathetic, practical help.

    Library Journal

Heart disease continues to be a preventable plague in the American population, with one of every five individuals suffering from some form of cardiovascular disease. Zaret (medicine & radiology, Yale Univ. Sch. of Medicine) and Stein (director of preventive cardiology, Beth Israel Medical Ctr., NY) have each written books that stress patient responsibility in understanding and maintaining one's own heart health. In Heart Care, Zaret, whose coauthor, Subak-Sharpe, has produced or collaborated on more than 40 health and medicine books, stresses that a personalized plan adapted to an individual's preferences and lifestyle is critical to success. Warning against making many changes at once, he advises on exercise, diet, psychological factors, and smoking cessation. A broad overview of tests and treatments for common heart conditions, including benefits and disadvantages, is offered. Alternative treatments are briefly covered, as are heart disease in special populations (e.g., women, the elderly, minority ethnic groups, young athletes) and advances in medical devices, therapies, and procedures. In Outliving, Stein underscores the new medical research that has improved available treatments for heart disease, challenging readers to become knowledgeable about their health. Chapters offer one of ten "New Rules" to beat heart disease, starting with discovering whether one already has it. Throughout, evidence-based studies are interspersed with Stein's recommendations for lifestyle changes. Readers will also learn about risk assessments; tests and treatments; exercise, diet, and the mind-body connection; and clinical studies on alternative and complementary therapies. Questions that patients should ask their doctors and tips on partnering with the medical team are excellent; Stein's description of how heart disease develops is enlightening. Both books contain valuable, current, evidence-based information, although Stein's volume is more personal and features more concrete advice. Both are recommended for larger libraries.-Janet M. Sorrow's Web: Hope, Help, and Understanding for Depressed Mothers and Their Children

    Author: Anne Sheffield

One of every four women suffers from depression at some point in her life, often during the prime childbearing years, yet most fail to recognize the telltale signs of this common, treatable illness and its potentially negative effects on the children of all ages. Drawing on her experience as both a child of a depressed mother and as a depressed mother herself, as well as on extensive research by experts in psychiatry, psychology, and child development, Books for a Better Life award winner Anne Sheffield offers advice on how to:

    • recognize the symptoms of depression and protect children from their impact
    • choose among the range of medical and psychotherapeutic options available
    • outline a strategy for fathers that will help them and the marriage weather the crisis
    • ensure that the illness does not return

As the first book to demystify, destigmatize, and humanize a long-taboo subject, Sorrow's Web points the way to sustaining and regaining a loving relationship between mother and child.

    Publishers Weekly

In her second book, Sheffield (How You Can Survive When They're Depressed) zeroes in on the particular ravages of clinical depression combined with motherhood. Sandwiched between two generations of depressed women in her own family, she supplements interviews and expert findings (university studies that, she claims, never reach a general audience) with her intimate perspective on the disease. Often misdiagnosed or dismissed as "normal," depression--whether it takes the form of teenage angst, baby blues or elderly sadness due to the deaths of contemporaries--strikes one in four women. It affects everyone around its primary victim, including husbands (there's a chapter just for them) and, most detrimentally, children, who manifest its effects through anxiety, low self-esteem and poor school performance. Lauding medication as the first line of defense, the author recommends psychotherapy and family counseling only after the right drug or dosage has been established. While the cause of maternal depression is still far from certain, Sheffield points to heredity as the most likely suspect, with female sex hormones as a possible contributing factor, and offers hope that more answers will soon be forthcoming. Womens Health in Clinical Practice or Nutrient Drug Interactions

Women's Health in Clinical Practice: A Handbook for Primary Care

    Author: Amy Lynn Clous

Traditionally, women's health has been synonymous with obstetrics and gynecology. With the exception of Family Medicine physicians who are trained in obstetric and gynecologic issues, most primary care physicians have received little training in reproductive health issues even though they care for women and girls. In recent years, there has been growing recognition that sex differences do exist between the organ systems of women and men, and research about male and female physiologic differences has bolstered the growing body of knowledge about sex differences. Women's Health: A Handbook for Primary Care presents the most recent changes in current research and provides the reader with an easily accessible reference to common women's health issues. The topics in this text range from health problems that largely affect only women, like cervical cancer and breast disease, to health problems that present differently in women than in men, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Chapters on polycystic ovary syndrome and oral health issues address health problems that bring together multiple organ systems including reproductive, cardiovascular and dental health. There are also useful chapters not typically found in primary care texts like eating disorders, interpersonal violence and sexual health. Women's Health: A Handbook for Primary Care is succinct, well organized, and contains easily understood, practical information for the most common health problems seen in women. This volume is a valuable text for anyone who practices primary care medicine.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Rita Duboyce, MD(Office of the Air Force Surgeon General)
Description:This book is designed to aid primary care providers in meeting the healthcare needs of their female patients. It covers reproductive, cardiovascular, endocrine, and dental problems and issues as they relate to women's health.
Purpose:This is needed with the advances in medicine and technology as well as gender equality. Research involving women's health has contributed to the growing knowledge and recognition of the physiological differences between the sexes.
Audience:The audience is primary care physicians who have received minimal training in obstetric and gynecological issues but treat women and girls. It would also be useful for physicians who need a refresher or a good clinic reference or even for residents in a primary care rotation. The authors have extensively researched and referenced the material and have employed the services of experts in their respective areas of women's health to write the chapters.
Features:The authors discuss in detail women's reproductive issues from oral contraceptive use to the treatment of menopause and its associated symptoms. Heart disease and diabetes are also covered with an emphasis on prevention and pharmacological therapy. The authors also discuss such psychological issues as premenstrual dysphoric syndrome and eating disorders. Differential diagnoses are included as well as charts on the staging of cancer. A few photos demonstrate the effects of various health issues on dentition.
Assessment:With its clear and succinct, text, this is indeed a useful reference on women's healthissues to have in the office. It is also a good refresher for those physicians who have been out of residency for a while.

    Nutrient, Drug Interactions

    Author: Kelly Anne Meckling

Current research has given us a more complete understanding of how the chemicals in foods and herbs interact with natural and synthetic drugs. In some cases a single food or supplement can profoundly increase or decrease the toxicity and/or efficacy of a single drug. Although it is standard practice to examine the effects of food consumption on the absorption and pharmacokinetics of new drugs, the issue has become greater than "should this medicine be taken with or without food." Nutrient-Drug Interactions focuses on food, herbals, and their chemical constituents as contributors to human health through control of metabolism, primarily as they relate to chronic disease development and treatment. The book's organization highlights the ailment being treated or prevented and the targets of therapy. Each chapter provides a comprehensive examination of the macronutrient, micronutrient, and phytochemical impact on drug action and includes advice on modification or supplementation in those cases where diet is a factor. The chapters focus on the molecular mechanism by which a food or chemical is thought to modify disease process and drug behavior. The book describes the roles of genetic variation and polymorphism in determining nutrient/drug responses, how they might be "profiled" to identify those likely to demonstrate specific interactions, and who would benefit from adjuvant or complementary therapies. The book explores how what is consumed affects response, whether on a population or individual level, to the pharmacologic agents that are the mainstay of chronic disease treatment/prevention around the world.

    Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Paul R Hutson, Pharm.D., M.S.(University of Wisconsin)
Description: This book provides an up-to-date summary of disease-based pathobiology and the mechanism of drug classes currently used in each disease. In this context, the chapters then introduce nutrients or dietary supplements that may enhance or attenuate the effect of the drugs.
Purpose: The editor's purpose is to present evidence-based summaries of the effects of food and herbals upon commonly used drugs. This is a timely and useful objective, as there is a burgeoning amount of new information on disease processes, pharmacologic mechanisms, and in vitro and clinical effects of dietary supplements. This book is helpful in providing a mechanistic understanding of how drug-nutrient interactions might be expected, or have been proven to occur. Different chapter authors provide varying degrees of interpretation of the magnitude and clinical impact of these interactions.
Audience: The book is clearly written and provides sufficient background to allow students and practitioners alike to understand the mechanisms of the interactions. The limited detail of clinical study results or of their clinical implications limits the utility of the book to practicing physicians, pharmacists, and dieticians. However, it does provide extremely useful distillations by experts in their fields that will be appreciated by those seeking a mechanistic understanding of drug-supplement interactions that will guide their clinical decisions.
Features: The topics covered in this book reflect the diseases for which the public most commonly uses dietary supplements. These includecancer treatment and prevention, dyslipidemias, and neurodegenerative or psychiatric disorders. In addition, useful chapters cover interactions with anesthetic agents, and gene expression effects that may have clinical relevance. There are limited figures, and none are in color. Additional figures to illustrate biochemical pathways would be helpful, as would tables to summarize the magnitude of any effects noted in pivotal clinical trials of the supplements considered.
Assessment: This book is well written and provides a mechanistic understanding of the known or likely effects of components found in common dietary supplements as they relate to the functioning of major drug classes. While the scope of the book excludes consideration of some dietary supplements such as CoQ10 or glucosamine, the book does provide an extremely helpful framework by which the effects and interactions of drugs and nutrients can be understood. In this regard, it is more helpful in providing a mechanistic understanding than other books and references such as the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, 8th edition (Pharmacists Letter, 2005), or Drug Facts and Comparisons 2006, 60th edition (Wolters Kluwer Health, 2005).
